  • It’s inexpensive. Making this banana syrup at home is much cheaper than buying a premade banana syrup in the store.
  • Simple ingredients. You only need 3 basic ingredients to make this syrup, all of which you probably already have on hand.

Ways to Use

This banana syrup is like a banana simple syrup, which is meant to be mixed into drinks. There are lots of creative drinks you can make. Here are some ideas:

  • co*cktails: This syrup works in any co*cktail that requires banana syrup, such as in this banana margarita.
  • Mocktails: Use this banana syrup to create non-alcoholic mocktails that everyone can enjoy.
  • Soda: Mix this syrup with club soda for a banana flavored soda drink.
  • Tea: Fruit flavored teas would go well with a spoonful of this banana syrup. Stir it into hot tea, or make flavored iced tea for summer.
  • Coffee: Experiment with flavored coffee, adding a spoonful to give your coffee a banana flavor.
  • Lemonade: Try making a pineapple banana lemonade or a kiwi banana lemonade.

Ingredients & Substitutions

Banana Syrup - The Littlest Crumb (3)
  • Banana: Use a ripe banana that has some brown spots. Ripe bananas have more sweetness and flavor.
  • Sugar: Use granulated sugar or cane sugar. Cane sugar will add a slight caramel flavor.
  • Water: Water gives the syrup the right consistency.

Equipment

Instructions

Step 1: Heat the banana, sugar and water on a saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally.

Step 2: As the banana heats up, use a fork to mash the banana into small pieces. Continue to heat for 5 to 10 minutes. Don’t let the syrup boil.

Step 3: Remove the syrup from the stove and use a sieve to separate out the banana chunks. Let the syrup cool to room temperature before using it.

Storage

  • Fridge: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.
  • Freezer: Freeze leftovers in a freezer safe container for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the freezer before using.

Expert Tips

  • Don’t boil the syrup. This banana syrup should have a thinner consistency. Boiling the syrup can cause too much water to evaporate, making the syrup too thick.
  • Mash the bananas. As the bananas warm up on the pan, mash them with a fork. This will help infuse more banana flavor into the syrup.
  • Use ripe bananas. Ripe bananas that are brown or have at least some brown spots will have more sweetness and flavor.
  • Coat bananas in the sugar. If you have time, cover the bananas in the sugar and let them sit for 1 to 2 hours before making the syrup. This helps draw out even more banana flavor.

FAQ

Why is there more sugar than water?

In standard simple syrup, the water to sugar ratio is 1:1. However, more sugar is used in this recipe to draw out the banana flavor and accommodate for the natural moisture present in bananas.

Is this banana syrup good for pancakes?

This banana syrup is meant for mixing into drinks. It may be too sweet for pancakes. Try this banana foster sauce for pancakes instead.
